Q: How do I rate my riding ability?
A: Most riders have a general idea of how good they are and what their comfort zone is. Here is a guide we use to rate riders according to what we do. Riding a new horse you may want to consider assessing yourself a level below your normal riding ability.
Riding Ability Levels
Beginner: Limited experience. Has never ridden or has ridden/taken lessons a few times. Not able to post a trot. Does not canter.
Novice: Able to comfortably mount and control the horse at a walk, posting trot and short canters. Can apply basic aids.
Intermediate: In control and confident at a walk, trot (posting and sitting,) seated and 2 point canters. Does not ride regularly.
Advanced Intermediate: Intermediate who rides regularly and is comfortable in the saddle for four or more hours a day.
Advanced: Secure at all gaits. Soft hands and an independent seat. Can handle a spirited horse.
Q: Where are you?
A: Mentone, Alabama has been a fresh air destination for more than 125 years. Mentone is situated atop Lookout Mountain where we have access to thousands of acres of public and private lands crisscrossed with trails to give you many different opportunities for your riding pleasure. Passing through woodland trails, there are river fords and scenic outlooks with sweeping vistas available to you.
Mentone is centrally located less than two hours from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Birmingham or Huntsville, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia. It's far better...not far away.
Q: What kind of horses do you have?
A: We have a mixed herd of well seasoned trail horses that includes Quarter Horses, Paints and Appaloosas.
Q: What if my friend doesn't ride?
A: There are lots of enjoyable activities for non-riders in the area including: hiking, nature walks, DeSoto State Park, Arts & Crafts Shops, and many more outdoor activities. You can even arrange to have riding lessons for someone who doesn't ride but would like to learn to.
Q: Why are seminars only in the Spring and Fall?
A: Spring and Fall are the best times to ride in this area. The woods are full of beautiful flowers in Spring and Autumn color is stunning. Temperatures are comfortable for both horse and rider.
